Buying a Used Phone in Lagos? Run This Check Before You Pay

Nigeria’s secondhand phone market moves fast, and most of the time that’s a good thing — it’s how a lot of people access flagship-level phones at a fraction of the original price. But there’s one risk that’s easy to miss in the excitement of a good deal: a phone that looks perfect can still be stolen, and if the original owner reports it, the device can be blacklisted and rendered unusable. Sometimes weeks after you’ve already paid for it.

The good news is that this is entirely preventable with five minutes of due diligence before you hand over any money.

The five-step check

1. Get the IMEI number.

Dial *#06# on the phone. A 15-digit number will appear on screen — this is the device’s unique fingerprint, and it’s what carriers use to track and blacklist phones. Write it down. Don’t proceed without it.

2. Run an IMEI check online.

Use a public IMEI lookup tool to check whether the device has been reported lost or stolen, or tied to unpaid carrier debt in another country. Both can result in the phone being blocked after purchase — even if it’s working fine today.

3. Check Nigeria’s phone registration status.

Nigeria’s phone registration system lets you verify whether a device has been reported stolen locally. If the seller can’t or won’t clarify this, treat it as a real red flag — not just a minor inconvenience.

4. Confirm no account lock is active.

Ask the seller to fully sign out of their Google or Apple account in front of you, and confirm the phone shows no activation lock. A phone still tied to someone else’s account can be remotely disabled at any time — that’s deal-breaking even if the IMEI check comes back clean.

5. Buy from a source that stands behind the device.

The most reliable way to sidestep all of this is buying from a shop that verifies devices before they hit the shelf, and that will actually back you up if something turns out to be wrong later. A market price that looks attractive can become very expensive very quickly if the device gets blacklisted.
